The Winnie Berry Adoption Center
Ring, ring... "Is this Winnie Berry?"
"Hi. Did I get the Winnie Berry shelter?"
These are the calls we at the Humane Society field every single day.
Winnie Berry founded the Humane Society of Angelina County in 1963. If you visit us at our location today, you can still see the memorial gravestones of her beloved pets, some appropriately named, like "Poodle", one of her favorite dogs. Over the years flagstones and plaques have been added to these sites. We maintain the grounds but many have gone the way of obscurity... very few remember these fur babies and even more of us know to SAY "Winnie Berry" - but who was she?
It is the 50th anniversary of the Winnie Berry Adoption Center, which is currently the Humane Society of Angelina County. We are searching for information on Winnie - historical stories, pictures, information about her history in life and with the animals she saved as well as the organization she helped create. Winnie was our founder, but even more than that, she is still an inspiration to our community and has become a symbol to those in search of a humane solution to homelessness, overpopulation, and more. Our mission reflects Winnie's goals in the 1960s. Her humane outreach was the right decision then and is even more so now.
If you have any information or know of a resource where we can learn more about Winnie, please email hsac@consolidated.net.
